Jim Welker: A Democrat's Best Friend

  • by: Colorado Pols

Rep. Jim Welker, the same political mastermind who last session tried to compare — to much embarassment from his own party — homosexuality to bestiality, is at it again.

As the Rocky Mountain News reports, Welker thought it would be a good idea to forward around an e-mail that contained ingenious statements such as:

When 75 percent of New Orleans residents had left the city, it was primarily immoral, welfare-pampered blacks that stayed behind and waited for the government to bail them out.”

“About five years ago, in a debate before the National Association of Black Journalists, I stated that if whites were to just leave the United States and let blacks run the country, they would turn America into a ghetto within 10 years. (But) I gave blacks too much credit. It took a mere three days for blacks to turn the Superdome and the convention center into ghettos, rampant with theft, rape and murder.”

“Had New Orleans’ black community taken action, most would have been out of harm’s way. But most were too lazy, immoral and trifling to do anything productive for themselves.”

“Blacks are obligated to help themselves and not depend on the government to care for them. We are all obligated to tell them so.”

Republicans should make up an ethics violation just to get rid of this genius; Welker, you’re killin’ the Republicans!

  1. Nice guy Welker apparently can’t control his urges or reflect for a couple of seconds before hitting the send key. Now, he seems oddly determined to continue at full throttle on his downward spiral. Perhaps someone could politely suggest that crisis management will require more than blathering on about how he didn’t read the racist screed before spamming the rest of the planet with it.

  2. Yet another posterboy for the homophobic and racist redneck’s that are the diehard core of Colorado’s republican base.  I saythink that the Dems should leave this seat uncontested until the republicans muster up the moral conviction to replace him themselves.  This way we will continue to have occasional reminders of the high moral ideals of the extreme political right.

  3. Close Pager.

Joe Jabaily (the candidate who was killed) was running and an Unaffiliated candiate, not a Dem. But it was his existence in the race that drove the Dems not to run anyone and support Jabaily. His death was a tragedy on many levels, both politcial and to his community in general. He was one of the good guys.

  4. Thanks, Dan. That’s right–I forgot Joe was unaffiliated. He was a good man, indeed and those that knew him still feel the loss.

  5. Castle,

Of current D party leadership in the House, we have:
4 of 16 leadership positions filled by racial minorities, as are 5 of the 22 ranking members of the various House committees.  Given the current makeup of the caucus, I’d say those were representative numbers.

  6. Deminator,
Thanks for inviting me into your off-topic of Bible/Dobson/War/God.  Though in this thread I only talked about the black vote and responding to a very excited George, I’m game. I’ll play along!
    1. It is amazing that people follow The Book that is God breathed! Not just amazing but miraculous.
    2. Am I for the war? Yes, but not happy that innocent people are dying.  But the tyrant needed to be stopped. He has killed many more thousnds intentionally, of his own citizens, compared to our accidental killing in an attempt to free the oppressed.
    3. I don’t know Dobson’s feelings. There are a lot of topics I see eye to eye with him, but others I don’t.
    4. Does The Bible ban using the name of God to promote your agenda? Actually, God wants you to embrace the truth, His word, and do His will. It’s quite liberating but also very humbling.

Thanks for the invite. Back to the topic.

  7. Well, if Welker is “Moral Trash”, then what are we to think of the AUTHOR of the essay?

    From the RM News article:

Essay author Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, who is black, is praised on one Web site for taking on the NAACP, a “tool of the largely ‘elite, socialist’ Democratic Party.”

  8. Now that I know your heart is the ultimate judge of what is Christianity, George, can I ask one question?  You describe yourself as being of the brokeback persuasion, but are you SURE that’s what Jesus meant when he said to turn the other cheek:-)

  9. Welker did not run opposed in 2004. He ran against a write-in candidate, Pam Howard. She ran against him after the Democratic candidate was killed in a biking accident. She was his former campaign manager.

Just to set the record straight.

  10. It is truly amazing people look to a book written thousands of years ago and let it guide them on there path today. Are you in favor of the war ThisCastleRocks / Voyageur?  If you are you have no right to judge because it makes you a hypocrite. We are killing thousands of unarmed citicens of IRAQ… How does Dobson feel about that?

Or is he too busy trying to take money from lobbyists and worrying about what his gay neighbors are doing in there bed room. Some Moral leader, lets stop loving families adopt and get married because of some book written thousands of years ago. Hmmm I wonder if the bible bans using the name of god to promote your own agenda. ( I bet it does… raising millions and millions under gods name does not seem like something he wants you to do.) Unless you use it to call cartoons gay and go after gay people.

It makes me sick that you would follow such trash?. That is what he is. Moral Trash

  11. Nope, ThisCastleRocks, it didn’t work. The “left,” as you say, has nothing at all to do with my heart and what I believe and where my priorities lie. So, try again if you might.

  12. ..”Mine is lived from my heart. Now, go f**k with that statement!”

George, what an amazing heart you have! Is that symbolic of the left?

  13. Now, Voyageur, what does the “Pope” comment have to do with any damned thing on this string. You guys are hellbent on being just so clever and condescending that it becomes really quite disgusting at times.

Dobson Christianity is gleaned from a book. Mine is lived from my heart. Now, go fuck with that statement!

  14. I find it interesting that the Dems receive nearly 9 out of every 10 black votes, and that a total of 117 blacks have been elected to U.S. Congress (90 Dems and 27 Reps) in history.  But when it comes to blacks in leadership positions within the D&C party, it’s nearly non-existent.  It’s as if the D&C party allows their vote and then immediately puts them in the corner. “Hey, we’ll give you your social programs and ‘limited’ bits of legislation that suits you, but you want what? A part of the leadership? No, we’ve given you your token leadership posts (Ron Brown, Jocelyn Elders, William Gray and John Clyburn). That’s all until we say so.”  It’s almost as if the D&C party is ran like a ….plantation (That was so Hillary-esque). Shameful Dems, just shameful!

  15. Technically Loveland didn’t vote for him. The first time a committe put him in the place of an outgoing Repub. (Tom Fritz I think?) and the second time he ran unopposed.

  16. I didn’t realize you were running for Pope, George!  Disagree with Dobson all you want over homosexuality, I’ve never seen any incident of racism attributed to him.  As an agnostic, the Biblical condemnation of homosexuality isn’t determinative to me.  But people who believe it to be the literal word of God, as Dobson does, have a harder time ignoring Leviticus, Paul, etc.  There is a regretable tendency on the left to try to smear as racist anybody who disagrees with any part of their agenda, as Wagtheblog just proved.

  17. His district’s up in Loveland. And Wage the Blog, I don’t know any Republican that would agree with him on this, so how about limiting the sweeping generalizations.

Most of them would probably just tell you he’s a whack job. And well, he is.

  18. Jesus, Voyageur: “…violation of the Christian principles he ‘Dobson’ holds dear.” Did you mean, “…right-wing, wingnut, Republic George W. Bush or die principles…”

Dobson and Christianity just seem not to be compatible in my book (brokeback that it may be!).

  19. James Dobson is a nut job. He may not come out as a racist but if his homophobic views are anything like he views race… Hmmm makes you wonder

  20. I’m so glad that Welker keeps shooting himself in the foot by putting his true agenda out in the open for everyone to see.

Earlier today I read an article where he said, “some of my best friends are of different skin color,” and then referenced a black republican.  The next line in the article was like, “that republican said they were friends, but not best friends.”  It made me laugh out loud.

  21. I’d challenge wagtheblog to cite a single incident of racism on James Dobson’s part.  That would be a violation of the Christian principles he holds dear.
As to Welker, our Whack Job Research Center has now established that he is Sir Robin’s equally evil Twin.  They were separated at birth.

  22. No kidding!

Welker is such an embarresmant.  I still remember Romanoff’s fabulous quote: “We’re talking about the budget and they are talking about beastiality.”

Welker on blacks, Tancredo on hispanics.  Tag team!

  23. Many House D’s and R’s spent time this morning castigating Welker for forwarding that e-mail. He claims he didn’t read it before forwarding it. Given his track record on racist and/or homophobic e-mails and comments, I doubt it.

  24. So when are Colorado Republicans going to send this guy to congress along side anti-Hispanic Tancredo and anti-gay bigot Musgrave?

Sounds like a trifecta to me….

  25. Another racist Republican.  Just put him along side Lott, Hyde, Dobson, and Thurmond.  But, unlike the rest of his party, at least he’s got the guts to say what every Republican thinks.

  26. So when are Colorado Republicans going to send this guy to congress along side anti-Hispanic Tancredo and anti-gay bigot Musgrave?

Sounds like a trifecta to me….

  27. I understnad that it was Wayne Allard who recruited Welker in the first place.  Maybe it is time for Senator Conway, er,I mean Allard to call for Welker to step down?

  28. Another skeptic,

It is preposterous to say that those who “bash” Welker for acting like an idiot are simply haters.  It is naive to be so tolerant that one tolerates intolerance.  This not only applies to bigots like Welker, but also to fundamentalists of the religious AND political extremes…both left and right.  Like it or not, we all need to make room for each other.  It is the republicans who have tolerated Welker’s intolerance within their party.  Until people like him are not welcome as representatives of the political right, it is fair to assume that he is in some way a representative of the right’s values.

Skeptic, I think life is to short for hate, but not for lively debate.

  29. The real lesson is that there is a reason that racism continues to pervade our society, whether it’s on college campuses or in bars.

The reason racism lives is that there are parents like Welker (assume he’s a parent) who continue to teach their kids to HATE people who are different from them because of race, religion, political beliefs or sexual orientation.

Welker’s not only a disgrace to the Republican Party, but also to Colorado and anyone who puts faith and belief ahead of open mindedness and good feelings toward all.

Notice, I didn’t say “tolerance,” which is a condescending word that shows the intolerance of those who use it.

What’s ironic is that the Dems who are bashing Welker for being hateful are themselves haters—of religious fundamentalists and Republicans. They’re as bad as the racists they denounce.

  31. Jackhammer,

Man that rant was all over the map.  I agree that everybody is not the same, but I think that racial diversity should be celebrated and shared, especially by our public officials.

Oh and Byrd is an old fart who just needs to retire.

Your personal prejudgements were waaay off base (if they were directed my way).  I have never even been to cherry creek.  I grew up in a very poor blue collar family on the west slope.  Many of my childhood friends were hispanic.  My family moved a lot looking for work, and I attended jr.high in Glendale AZ where (as a white boy) I was a minority.  My friends were equally hispanic and black…race didn’t matter because we were all so damn poor.  Much of my family and extended family is Hispanic or bi-racial….I started college at fort lewis where I fell in love with a Hopi (heartbreaker)and transfered to CSU where the biggest drawback was the Vanila.

Our state, and country for that matter, obviously still have a lot of work to do with issues of race.  What people like Welker do is not helpfull.  If he were a Dem I would be demanding a resiganation, not defending him by transfering blame to others.  The republicans in this state need to do a little housecleaning.

Who cares if the man who wrote the essay is black, the color of his skin does not mean that he has special insights or his opinion is more valid.  People of every race say/write/do stupid things all of the time.  That does not make them representative of their whole group.

  32. ColoradoPols: The man who wrote the essay in question is black. Does that make him an Uncle Job, according to you hypocritical asswipes? Or just a nigger?

  33. Granted, what Welker did was pretty idiotic. But I love the comments about the “racist Rublicans” and do good, love all Dems, I mean get real. Calling Lott a racist as his counterpart Byrd was a full blown member of the Klan, but he get’s a pass. Having ACTUALLY lived in the South and in in major metropolitan cities on the East Coast, and not born and bread in vanilla valley, I find it fascinating how Colorados, and alleged do good Dems in particular, love to think they understand and want diversity, until it actually comes and upsets their little world.

I have always been amazed by you folks who befriend the local “token” minority baby them and drop them when its not of use anymore, you all talk a big game, but want nothing more than to appoint a “diversity task force” and then forbid their white children from dating blacks. I have witnesed it twice from city elected officials since coming to CO and working with them and it truley amazes me.

Being of color(not telling which) myself I asure you you are not impressing anyone by pretending that everyone is exactly the same, you are only patronizing. Every person will be judged in the end but the useless lip service is appalling, I’ve never seen more frauds in all my life since coming to this place and these fake “liberal” attitudes. Former Rep. James Traficant (D-OH) used more n-words than I’ve ever heard in my life. Get in the world and think for yourself.

Just because most (excluding the President) Republicans preach accoutability and don’t encourage a welfare state does not mean they are racist. Sorry to vent and be personal but I, that’s right,pre-judge, these comments and have a pretty good idea who they are coming from, grads of Cherry Creek, Cheyenne Mountain, Fort Collins, Fairview that preach diversity and blanketing all Republicans and racist because they take the words staright from their 27 year old teaches who grew up in a 92% white school and were told the same thing, idiots

  36. Jackhammer,

That rand was all over the map!

Your prejudgements are way off.  I have never even been to Cherry Creek.  I grew up in rural CO in a very poor blue collar family.  Many of my family and extended family are hispanic and biracial.  I spent several years out of state, and went of Jr. High in Glendale AZ.  There as a minority (i am “anglo”)my friends were equally black and hispanic.  Race didn’t matter to us because we were all so damn poor.

None of your Buisness…Who cares IF the man who wrote the essay was black, that alone does not guarentee him any speaking privealge.  Besides people of all races say/write/do stupid things all of the time, it does not make them representative of their ethnic group or whatever.

Oh and  Byrd is an old fart who needs to just retire.

  37. Welker’s forwarding of many racially and ethnically challenged columns are a disgrace to this country, let alone his house district.  What is even more disgraceful are the comments in the Loveland Reporter Herald call in line that say he shouldn’t apologize and who believe what was written in that article.

    written by Lovelander

  38. Hmmm,

Is Welker a bigot for agreeing with a black man who criticizes blacks who live with a victim mentality?

I think I like Jesse Lee Peterson.  Welker should never apologize for quoting him.

Oh yeah, Terrance Carroll is just another black apologist.  That’s only a little better than being a full-blown poverty pimp like Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakan, and Al Sharpton.

  39. Was surprised that one of the candidates running for CD7 had the courage to offer a resolute promise to end the war in Iraq. Also like his healty care proposals. Herb Rubenstein is definitely taking the lead in this race
